Beth Anne Piehl is a Petoskey resident who has enjoyed several communications and marketing related careers in Northern Michigan. She has a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Michigan.

She moved to Petoskey in 1995 to accept a position as a reporter at the Petoskey News-Review, where she worked on and off as a writer, editor and graphic designer until 2010. Her journalism background also includes the Ann Arbor News, the Jackson Citizen Patriot, and the U of M student paper, the Michigan Daily. She received numerous writing and investigative reporting awards during her years as a reporter and editor.

In 2010 she accepted the position of Communications and Website Development Director for Emmet County, a department she grew into becoming a vital part of Emmet County’s government operations.  Her experience in this position included writing, editing, photography and graphic design. During her time with the county she received several awards, including the Community Enthusiast Award from the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce (2015) and the Gov. John B. Swainson Award from the state of Michigan for her work in preserving the history of the Northern Michigan region through a magazine series she developed called the “Essence of Emmet.” She did the majority of the planning, writing, editing and graphic design for this four-part series covering pre-settlement days through contemporary times.

In 2017 she spent a brief time as the Marketing Director for the Great Lakes Center for the Arts, a new world-class performing arts facility in Bay Harbor. She was thrilled to join the growing team at the center as it prepared to open its doors in the summer of 2018!

Shortly after joining the GLCFA staff, Piehl was made aware of a job opening with Char-Em ISD that she long admired and hoped to attain, as Communications Director. She was offered the position in summer of 2017 and started this new position at the start of the school year 2017-18. In her role with the ISD, Piehl oversees communication projects for the organization and also projects at the request of the 11 public school districts within the ISD’s borders. She enjoys the pace of the work, being out-and-about each day working with schools, and being connected to youth through the work she does to assist districts with their communications related projects and needs.

In her community, Piehl is an active member of the SAFE in Northern Michigan coalition, a group that works to combat youth substance use in Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet counties. She has enjoyed presenting Education Day to the participants of the Leadership Charlevoix County and Leadership Little Traverse programs as well, and assists on several other committees helping with a variety of communications related needs.

Piehl is the mom of twin sons, Drew and Evan, who are currently 8th graders at Petoskey Middle School (2019-20 school year). They are the joy of her life! Together she and her sons enjoy skiing, biking, playing sports in the yard and exploring Northern Michigan. The family also has a new puppy, a golden retriever named Madelyn.
