David L. Jones “DJ” has been with the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation since 2000. He was the Program Officer from 2000 to 2009 and has been the Executive Director since June 2009.  Prior to joining the Community Foundation, he and his wife lived in the Washington D.C. area where he worked for the World Bank Group. His other career experience was in the hospitality industry.

In relation to his work at the Community Foundation and the philanthropy field, DJ has been very active with the Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF). While Program Officer, he served a three year term as an adult advisor on CMF’s Michigan Community Foundation Youth Project committee, which is an initiative involving teens in grantmaking decisions.  He is currently on the CMF Board of Trustees and chairs both their Community Foundation Committee and Public Policy Committee.  As the Executive Director of the Community Foundation he works closely with donors and professional advisors to promote philanthropy through current giving and estate planning.

DJ has a BA degree in International Studies from the University of South Carolina and an MBA from Lawrence Technological University.  He is active in his community, including the Kiwanis Club of Petoskey, Leadership Little Traverse, and Emmanuel Episcopal Church.  DJ lives in Petoskey with his wife, Patricia “T”, and their two daughters.

About the Community Foundation

PHSACF Logo_cmyk.jpg

The Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation was founded in 1991 by a group of forward thinking community members who saw the long-range benefits of a community foundation:  To create a permanent pool of funds donated by local people for local good.

Our stated mission is to improve the quality of life for all people in Emmet County, by:

  • Connecting donors with community needs
  • Building a permanent source of charitable funds to serve our area
  • Addressing a broad range of community issues through innovative grantmaking
  • Championing philanthropy and active citizenship

A Board of Directors – fifteen knowledgeable, dedicated Emmet County residents – oversees the Community Foundation, with five full-time staff managing the day-to-day operations.

What are community foundations?

Community foundations are independent, public charities that steward philanthropic resources from institutional and individual donors to community-based organizations. Community foundations strengthen communities by enabling people to create charitable funds that address a wide range of interests. Through visionary, diverse, and inclusive philanthropy, community foundations have become catalysts for significant community change.
